Easy Ways to Make Custom Cannabis Topicals at Home

Believe it or not, making your own cannabis topicals doesn’t have to be a daunting task. In fact, for some it’s an enjoyable hobby. For others it means more relief from a custom lotion or salve. If you’ve ever made your own edibles, then you already have the skills needed to make topicals.

Why Make Your Own Cannabis Topicals?

When commercial cannabis products are more available than ever, it’s hard to imagine anyone still takes the “DIY” route. However, there are many reasons that you might want to make your own topicals. From customizing the strain used, to the ingredients that make up the rest of the topical, you have full control. This is essential for some consumers, especially those suffering from chronic pain conditions.

Though commercial products are effective, some prefer more control over what goes into their topicals. This could be because of allergies, a hope for a more potent topical, or the addition of certain essential oils or other ingredients.

An Easy Multi-Use Cannabis Topical Recipe

As we mentioned, if you’ve ever made edibles yourself then you have all the skills you need to make an effective topical. If you regularly vape, keep in mind that your vaporized left-over flower can be used to make topicals, rather than requiring fresh ground flower.

Ingredients and Tools:

-          1 ½ cups coconut oil

-          10-20 grams of dried, ground cannabis flower (or already vaped bud)

-          1/3 cup beeswax, shea butter, almond milk, essential oils, or other common skin care ingredient

-          Cooking pot or crockpot

-          Baking sheet

-          Cheesecloth

-          Storage containers

Directions:

1.       Decarboxylate your ground cannabis – unless you’re using already vaped bud, then skip this step. (Single layer on a baking sheet at 240 degrees Fahrenheit for 25-30 minutes.)

2.       Pour coconut oil into cooking pot or crockpot and heated on a low heat.

3.       Add decarboxylated flower and let simmer for 3-4 hours, stirring occasionally.

4.       Add additional ingredients (beeswax, almond milk, essential oils, etc.) and remove from heat.

5.       Strain through cheesecloth into storage containers. Squeeze all remains of flower through the cloth.

Customize Ingredients for a Personalized Topical

The best part about making your own topicals is the freedom to customize them to your own unique needs. Looking for a lotion that relieves pain and rejuvenates the skin? Try adding shea butter to your topical. If you’re looking for something with a stronger scent, add an essential oil with a potent aroma that can’t be missed. For those looking for additional pain relief, combining the THC with a cooling agent like aloe or menthol might be exactly what you’ve been looking for.

When you can’t seem to get the desired effect out of a store-bought product, the do-it-yourself method always gives you more room to fit your personal needs. It might sound intimidating, but making lotions, soaps and balms isn’t as difficult as it sounds. Infusing them with cannabis is also easier than most anticipate – and allows you to have control over which strains are used in your topicals.

Once you’ve decided to make your own topicals, the only questions left are where you’re going to get a high-quality bud and if you’re going to decarboxylate freshly ground bud or use your vaporized leftovers.
