What Should You Do If You Eat Too Many Cannabis Edibles?

Consuming too much cannabis in the way of edibles can be an awfully uncomfortable experience – and even terrifying for some, especially novice or first-time consumers. If you’ve never experienced the feeling of being way too high from THC then you’re probably lucky – for most people, it is bound to happen sooner or later. Whether this is because you’re new to edibles, tried too potent a strain for your first time, or are experiencing wax or other concentrates for the first time, getting too stoned is never a comfortable feeling.

You can take steps to prevent this from happening with edibles – like starting with low amounts and waiting at least an hour or more before consuming any more cannabis, as suggested in our Guide to Dosing with Cannabis Edibles. However, if you’re here looking for a way to combat the intense and unpleasant feeling of being too high, then we’ve got you covered – here are a few things you can do to help you get through it.

CBD Oil

The absolute best way to combat an “overdose” of THC is with another cannabinoid. Consuming CBD oil – by vaping or eating – will help you feel better because CBD counteracts the psychoactive effects of THC. This is why high CBD strains will not get you high, or not as high, even when THC is present.

Controlled Breathing

If CBD oil is not available to you – or you need to be able to calm down or focus well enough to get to it – then controlled breathing should be your first step. Whether you are feeling extra paranoid, sick to your stomach, lethargic or dizzy, it can help you become grounded again and helps by giving your something to focus on. Take deep breaths – in through your nose and out through your mouth – and keep your breaths as even as possible.

Keep Hydrated

Being hydrated from the beginning can help you to prevent reaching the feeling of being too stoned – but if you didn’t think to drink a bottle of water before hand it’s not too late. Icy water is best if you’re already feeling the effects of too much THC – it will help wake you up, kill cotton mouth, and rehydrate all in one.

Take a Shower

This still sort of falls under hydrating – but many people swear that taking a shower when they are too high will help them to come down. If you are suffering the effects of too many or too strong of an edible, then if it’s available, a shower or bath may be just what you need to get your mind off feeling bad while the feeling subsides.

While consuming too much THC will certainly not kill you, it is not a comfortable feeling – and it’s not entirely surprising that a small number of new consumers each year wind up in the emergency room from consuming too much in the way of edibles. Since edibles can affect you differently than smoking or vaping cannabis, it is important to follow simple steps to ensure the safest and most enjoyable experience possible.
