Can Vaping CBD Help You Quit Smoking?
Trying to quit smoking cigarettes is one of the hardest addictions to beat – in fact, it has a higher relapse rate than most hard drugs. In fact, it is considered equally as addictive as heroin, which may put things in perspective as to why it’s not such an easy habit to drop. While there are many tools and medications available to help people quit smoking, they are only so effective; and alternatives like nicotine vapes aren’t helping you beat the addiction, just reduces the risk you’re taking.
But what if you could turn to a natural compound, vape, and still lose beat the nicotine addiction? There is a surprising amount of evidence that suggests that CBD could be beneficial to those trying to quit smoking – and vaping is the perfect way to introduce the cannabinoid in a way that could be the key to quitting.
In one study, researchers had participants take an 800-milligram dose of CBD while others were given a placebo. While it was not vaped, the idea was to find out whether CBD could potentially help curb the thoughts of smoking and reduce symptoms and cravings. In this study it was found that those who were given CBD had fewer thoughts of smoking, giving them a better chance at quitting.
"I wanted to investigate if a component of cannabis, cannabidiol, a non-intoxicating cannabinoid could be used in a positive way, to treat withdrawal," author Chandni Hindocha told website PsyPost.
The downside to that first study is that the participants were only given a single dose of CBD – and anyone who has tried to quit smoking knows that it’s not (often) done in a day. However, another study took a slightly different approach, though the study was still relatively short. Rather than giving a single dose of CBD participants were given either an inhaler with CBD or a placebo inhaler and were instructed to use the inhaler when they felt the urge to smoke over the coming week.
During the week of the study, researchers found that those with the placebo inhalers saw no reduction in the number of cigarettes smoked. On the other hand, those treated with a CBD inhaler significantly reduce the number of cigarettes they smoked – by 40 percent in fact. This suggests that the CBD inhaler was able to help curb cravings where the placebo inhaler was not.
Dr. Morgan also adds that “This (40%) was more than expected. However, it is difficult to compare to other smoking cessation therapies as we did not ask people to stop smoking, simply to try using the inhaler when they wanted a cigarette.”
While vaping CBD is no guarantee that you will succeed in your goal to quit smoking, it certainly couldn’t hurt your chances. In fact, the research points to the fact that vaping CBD could be extremely beneficial to those who are attempting to break the bad habit of smoking cigarettes.
